Dr. James Whittenberg


Dr. James F. Whittenberg has been an educator and counselor for nearly 30 years. He has served as a licensed professional counselor since 2010 and board-approved clinical supervisor since 2012. He accepted a dual appointment in 2014 at UT-Brownsville and UT-Rio Grande Valley, where he is currently Associate Professor of Counseling. Dr. Whittenberg has served on the Faculty Senate Executive Committee and the Faculty Development Council, among other university and college committees. He also previously served as Faculty Director of the UTRGV Counseling & Training Clinic. In addition to over 15 publications, Dr. Whittenberg authored the accreditation self-study for his department and coordinated their successful site team visit. He has taught over a dozen graduate courses in counseling and is currently teaching Career Development, Theories & Techniques of Psychotherapy, and Group Counseling. Dr. Whittenberg received a B.S. in Music Education from Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, a M.Ed. in Counseling and Guidance from the University of Texas at Brownsville, and a Ph.D. in Counseling Studies from Capella University in Minneapolis.
